Important facts about calories in figs

There are 47 calories in figs, which basically means one large serving of figs.  A large serving of figs is two figs that are about a half inch in diameter.  There are plenty of good reasons to eat figs, which are a very healthy food.  The low number of calories in figs is only one indication of just how healthy a food figs are.

Whenever you’re evaluating a food for calories like counting the calories in figs, it’s important to read the entire food label.  For example, the food label will show you that this same large serving of figs only has two calories from fat.  Of those fat calories, only .1 grams of them are from polyunsaturated fat.  The other .1 gram falls into the total fat category.  This shows you that figs are very low in saturated fat.  In fact they don’t really tip the scales of fat measurement at all.

Another important part of the food label you should consider when looking at the number of calories in figs is the cholesterol.  Figs do not have any cholesterol in them, so this is certainly another bonus for this already healthy food.  Figs are also very low in sodium, including only one milligram of sodium in one large serving of them.

Now let’s talk about the nutrients that figs are very high in.  Figs are a great source of dietary fiber, including 1.9 grams of dietary fiber for a large serving.  This measures up to about seven percent of your daily recommended fiber intake, which makes figs a winner in the fiber department.  After all, most people do not get enough fiber in their diets, so figs are a welcome addition in this category.

The only bad thing about figs is that they are very high in sugar.  A large serving of figs has 10.4 grams of sugar in it.  This may mean diabetics won’t want to eat too many figs.  Overall, it’s always good to have a balanced diet, and you may want to consider adding figs to your diet for the fiber.  However, remember to compensate for the higher amount of sugar that is in figs.

Another thing to consider when you’re trying to figure out the number of calories in figs is how they are prepared.  Dried figs have 5x more calories than figs that are fresh, which means that you’ve got to multiply the above numbers by five if you’re looking for calorie numbers about dried figs.  However, despite the higher calorie content in dried figs, remember that both both fresh and dried figs are very healthy to eat.

In addition to the nutrients described above, figs are also great sources of potassium, iron, beta-carotene, and digestive enzymes.  Figs are perfect for everyone, but especially those who suffer from digestive problems.  Eating figs will help constipation, digestion problems, and anemia, and even help protect against cancer.  Figs are a great way to add nutrition to anyone’s diet.
